Beekeeping in Southern Arizona
Jaime de Zubeldia is the co-owner of Sun Apiaries/ReZoNation Farm which offers training and produces honey and bees in Southern Arizona. In 2016 he completed a USDA Local Food Promotion Program grant to bolster honey production and beekeeper training on tribal lands in cooperation with the San Xavier Coop Farm and AATechSolar. Currently Jaime is working to compare the economic differences of various honey bee mating control methods specific to Africanized honey bee regions through the USDA’s Western SARE program administered through Utah State University and with assistance from University of Arizona Agricultural Extension. In addition to working full-time as a beekeeper, Jaime is the Vice President of the newly re-formed non-profit, Southern Arizona Beekeeping Association. Jaime has considerable practical experience in the management and behavior of Africanized honey bees, and works to provide education to the public about honey bee safety in Africanized regions.
Previously Jaime studied biology before earning a degree in civil engineering and worked as a project reviewer for the United States Green Building Council specializing in energy and water resource efficiency. During his time as Director of Farm Programs for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Jaime co-founded a food policy council to raise awareness of food policy and agriculture within local government and the general community.
